Google has just announced its annual upgrade to the Android OS. This time the release is called Oreo, named after the popular cookie originally manufactured by Nabisco. Oreo brings in a lot of new features and refinements to the already well polished Operating System (I'm a fan of Android 7 Nougat). In this post, we take a look at some of the new features that the 8th numerical iteration of Android brings to the table.

Don't you just hate it when you have saved your password to that 20 character email account (or your facebook or twitter) you created on Google chrome, but you can't use the autofill option to sign in to your email client on your Android? Well, Android 8 takes care of that by introducing System-wide auto fill, that helps you automatically fill user saved information such as emails, passwords, name, address, etc. Your fingers will love you for this!

This one's my favourite. Suppose you're watching a video on Youtube and your phone constantly pings you on Whatsapp that requires urgent reply. With picture-in-picture mode, you can watch your favourite videos in a small movable window that floats around your screen, while you use other apps that require your attention. Neat, we say!

With this feature, you don't have to reach out for your notification drawer constantly to check that ever-recurring notifications that different apps send you. Notification dots, as the name implies, appears as colored dots on the app you have notification from, so you can directly jump into the notification by long pressing on the app icon. Phew, no more juggling with that huge phone of yours to reach the top end of the screen!

This is going to drain out to the older versions of Android as well, but essentially keeps your phone safe from harmful apps that might creep into your phone under your nose. Thank you Google.

Android 8 keeps a check on apps that are running in the background and notifies you at the same time so that you know whether to kill that app in order to save your battery and data. Where was this when facebook drained 1GB of my data and cost me Rs. 130/- :/

We saved the best (or probably the worst) one for the last! WHO DOESN'T LOVE EMOJIS!? Even if you don't (tell me you're lying), you definitely cannot ignore them. Emojis are now as much as a part of our life as your mother tongues are. Tell me one expression or one thing that you want to convey to someone and only emojis can't help you achieve that? Hard to find something similar to that, no? So, emojis have been updated to a new look in Android Oreo and a ton more have been added. This is right away the most noticeable change that you'll see in Oreo. Do I love the new look? I don't know, though I miss the old Android blob emojis. They were cute AF!
So there you have it! The all new Android 8.0. Stay tuned for more coverage on this sweet new release from Google. We'll review it as soon as we get our hands on in one of our devices.
